Over 70 years old and still just as magical, The Wizard of Oz tells the story of Kansas farm-girl Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who is one day swept up in a mysterious tornado and swiftly deposited in the wonderfully disconbobulating land of Oz, where she meets various friends and foes on her journey to find the elusive wizard, the only person who might be able to get her home.

Clockwork: Day 5

20 05 2011

“Ok, so the brochure says ‘ages eight and over’, and you think this is a kids’ show. Don’t be put off! Excellence has no age limit!…”

Just in case our Young PromotERs haven’t yet managed to convince you, take a look at what some, eh, less sprightly critics have to say…

www.visiblefictions.co.ukFrom the moment the black-clad cast – three actor-singers, two musicians – drift on-stage, as if lured by the tick-tock clicking of rhythm sticks, they collude brilliantly in bringing the story alive…“– The Herald ****

Clockwork: Day 4

19 05 2011

“Not sure I should be this scared of a show adapted from a kids’ book! But through the gaps in my fingers, Clockwork was the most giddily imaginative production I’ve seen this year…”

Everyone likes to be frightened, right? What’s the scariest story you’ve ever heard? Why was it scary?

‘I don’t know if it’s more frightening hearing them here in the parlour, or reading them later on your own,’ said someone else.
‘It’s worse on your own, believe me,’ said another. ‘You can feel the ghostly fingers creeping up your spine, and even when you know what’s going to happen next you can’t help jumping when it does.’...”*

Of course, it’s all very well telling scary stories… but how would you feel if the characters of your stories started coming alive, and weren’t too keen on following your plot…?

Clockwork: Day 3

18 05 2011

“Don’t be surprised if you forget where you are: Clockwork‘s world might be made of puppets and pictures and snatches of songs– but for seventy minutes my senses were totally mesmerised…”

Click the image below to  hear some of the music that accompanies the odd goings-on in the town of Glockenheim, where just one simple little tune could be the difference between life and death…

www.visiblefictions.co.uk “‘What’s he doing? That sword is sharp– stop it, Doctor! Make it stop!’
Dr Kalmenius whistled two or three bars of a simple, haunting little tune, and Sir Ironsoul fell still The point of his sword was right at Karl’s throat…
‘What is that tune?’ said Karl. ‘Why does he stop for that?’
‘It’s a little tune called ‘The Flowers of Lapland’.’ said Dr Kalmenius. ‘He likes that, bless him. He stands still to listen to it, and that tips his balance wheel the other way, and then he stops. What a marvel! What a piece of work!’*

Clockwork: Day 2

17 05 2011

“PUPPETS ARE DISTURBING… transforming an old folk tale into a stylish and harrowing performance, this is Visible Fiction’s ‘Clockwork‘…”

Doctor Kalmenius– the mysterious and shadowy villain conjured up from the recesses of a foolish boy’s fantastical imagination? The saviour of a royal linage and a young couple’s broken dreams? Or something much, much darker…?

He could have made his fortune if he’d wanted to, but he wasn’t interested in fortune or fame. He was interested in something far deeper than that. he would spend hours sitting in graveyards, contemplating the mysteries of life and death. Some said he experimented on dead bodies. Others said he was in league with the powers of darkness. No-one knew for certain. But one thing they did know was that he used to walk about at night, pulling behind him a little sledge containing whatever secret matter he was working on at the time…”* www.visiblefictions.co.uk

But how exactly do you untangle fantasy and reality, when they’re wound so tightly together?

Clockwork: Day 1

16 05 2011

Counting down to this Sunday’s production of Clockwork, every day this week at 2pm (like clockwork!) we’ll be bringing you a tiny sneak peak of Visible Fictions & Scottish Opera’s magical adaptation of Philip Pullman’s spine-tingling novella, accompanied by some one-sentence reviews from our Young PromotERs, who were lucky enough to see it before anyone else!

First of all, like all good stories, let’s set the scene…

“Once upon a time (when time ran by clockwork), a strange event took place in a little German town… It began on a winter’s evening, when the townsfolk were gathering in the White Horse tavern. The snow was blowing down from the mountains, and the wind was making the bells shift restlessly in the clock tower. The windows were steamed up, the stove was blazing brightly, Putzi the old black cat was snoozing by the hearth; and the air was full of the rich smells of sausage and sauerkraut, of tobacco and beer…” *

“A hauntingly beautiful fairytale that blurs the line so thoroughly between what’s real and what isn’t, you’ll think twice before opening your next storybook!”
