Eastwood Park Gallery – New Exhibition

23 07 2012

Gavin Russell – Georgia

This series of pictures came from a single trip by amateur photographer Gavin Russell to Georgia in 2009. The country was just recovering from the recent military conflict with Russia (in 2008) and tourists were a rare sight. The shots were taken mainly in three locations, Tblisi the faded capital city where power-cuts were common, Kazbegi, a formerly crucial but now forgotten outpost on the Trans Caucasus Highway, and Omalo, a remote mountain village on the Chechen Border where there was no gas, electricity or running water.

The people in Georgia were warm, welcoming and delighted to share their country with the few tourists that came. They were rightfully proud of a beautiful country with boasts incredible natural scenery alongside the scars and monuments of a traumatic past.

During his travels Gavin refused to use maps or guide books so the majority of the shots were taken as candid street images during many a long and lost wander.

Exhibition runs to 26 August 2012

Alina Kisina: City of Home 32

Alina Kisina’s photographic series ‘City of Home’ might, at first glance, seem merely aimed at capturing the daily life of her hometown of Kiev, Ukraine. Yet Kisina’s strangely evocative photographs are concerned less with documentary impressions than with opening up realms above and beyond the mundane images that define the surface of her work. For the subway steps, skylines, facades, and factory lots that Kisina depicts resonate with an order that seems not of this world. Her pictures—often quite literally—reflect realms that seem to exist side-by-side with or beyond the mere material givens of her everyday subject matter. Although superficially static, her serene, perfectly composed photographs actively lead us into higher realms that are uplifting and light: they cause us to transcend the materiality of everyday existence and enter into planes of experience heretofore unknown.

Alina Kisina is a self-taught Ukrainian photographer living in London. She regularly returns to her native land to take pictures that use a mixture of abstraction and representation suggesting a reality beyond that of the things actually shown. In 2010 Kisina’s work from the exhibition ‘Zerkalo|Mirror’ was featured in ‘Thinking in Unity after Postmodernism’ – an international conference on innovative approaches to aesthetics, literature and film at the University of Munich. Work from the series ‘City of Home’ was shown at Format 2011, an international photography festival in Derby.

The exhibition runs until 30 April

‘Behind The Mirror’ Exhibition

9 03 2011

When we look in the mirror, what do we see? A perfect image of ourselves, maybe, just as we are. Except: our perceptions of our ‘selves’ are much bigger than that mirror reflection, aren’t they?

Previewing last Sunday night and now open to the public, EPT is proud to host brand new exhibition ‘Behind The Mirror’, showcasing the work of three recent graduates of Duncan of Jordanstone Art College as they explore ideas of the body and self through a diverse and exciting collection of figurative paintings.

Ex Eastwood High pupil David Wylie, who curates the exhibition explains: “‘Behind the Mirror’ features work by myself and three other Scottish visual artists. All of our work explores the idea of the body and self through the medium of paint. I am delighted that Katie Johnston, Katie MacKinnon and Martin McGuinness and I are all exhibiting together. Our individual styles vary greatly which provides a broad appeal to draw in visitors in to the exhibition.

David Wylie and Mike Tyson Katie Johnson canvas David and two out of a triptych Katie MacKinnon and trachea

Were you at the gallery opening on Sunday? Or have you visited since? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the exhibition: what inspired you? What confused you? What pieces were your favourites? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

‘Behind The Mirror’ is open to the public between Monday 7th March and Saturday 30th April. Entry to the gallery is FREE.
